Coolidge, Kansas ~ Thursday, April 16, 2026

All too young to realize this duty
left upon weak, fallen shoulders, shaken
left broken, little bird, side of the road

tough luck, first-world problems, slender beauty
observe the car swerve into the past tense
obey all the rules, had they not taken

yesterday from Easter Mass to unload
only to come earlier, more often
until it is too late, the fog too dense
never unfelt, unimagined, unseen
green fields untended, unintended words

till the fields, listen to the chatter, keen
over meaning, understanding the birds

rest, eyes cry, sorrow grave, sparrow asks when
emptiness as a reflection, mirror
as if to understand, mistakes unfold
lightning moments captured, blurred the past
in a bottle, heat and sunshine, nearer
zips fast away, long gone, now out of sight
empty the stale water, be no less bold

thimble in a small hand, the die is cast
honesty, a felt-sense, tumbles from eyes
in loneliness, a hand, a touch, so light
soft, gentle, swift and painless, fleeting, gone

dismal alone, comfort nowhere, voices
until the lights grow dim, what have I done
time meaningless, proximity, choices
yesterday, said goodbye, this I despise
